Ask For Janice – Review

I recently ventured into East London to meet the lovely Lissy for lunch at new trendy restaurant and gin joint Ask For Janice.

It’s pretty minimal and stripped back but still comfortable. I arrived and ordered a coffee while I waited for Lissy to escape work for lunch and didn’t feel like I was somewhere cold and clinical more like I was in the common rom at uni! Whilst I water I snuck up to the counter and snapped a picture of the cakes. Look at the choice! It’s nice to know that despite being a gin joint/proper restaurant it would also be a good stop for coffee and cake.

As we were on Lissy’s lunch break and pushed for time, I text the menu over to her and then ordered for us both. There was a great selection on the menu and I had trouble choosing unlike Lissy who text me back quick sharp with her order of burger and fries.

There are side dishes on the menu, which normally suggests a smaller main, so we both opted for a side. In honesty though I don’t think mine needed it, but I think Lissy’s burger would have looked a little sad with no fries! What do you think?

Our food came promptly and looked great. As they have such a prolific gin list we couldn’t resist a little try and picked this one that came with cranberries. No lemon slices here. Of course they had Fever Tree tonic too.

I picked the baked eggs and a fennel salad. My eggs came with a huge chunk of four dough bread which was amazing for dipping. I really really loved this dish and as I had a willing photographer went for my best ‘The Londoner’ style food shots!

Do you have any East London recommendations for me? I’ll have to venture that way again.
