I’ve started foregoing some of my Ocado shop for a trip to the market. I love markets but it’s a bit of a trek and clashes with parkrun for us to get to our local one. Now I’ve found one I can just about get to and from in my lunch break at work. I was waxing lyrical about how much I’d got back in the office and decided to compare how much it would have cost me in the supermarket, some things aren’t completely comparable but I’ve done my best and erred on the side of giving the supermarket the win! I’m so astounded by the value I wanted to share some of it with you.

- A green curly lettuce thing

17th July: To replace my Ocado fruit and veg
- 2 corn on the cob
- 100g Rocket
- 5 tomatoes
- 3 ripe and ready avocados
- 5 peppers
- A lot of mushrooms
- 1 yellow courgette
- 1 cucumber
- A bunch of carrots
- 1.2kg braeburn apples
- 4 doughnut peaches
Sainsbury’s Price £17.83
I couldn’t fit the whole trolley on one screen so you’ll just have to trust me. I added 2 courgettes to the Sainsbury’s shop as my yellow market one is MASSIVE. Not as large a saving as last time and I did get ripped off on the peaches. One stall was offering 10 for £2 (shouted) which drew me in, I didn’t know what I would do with 10 so I asked for half, but he pointed out that the written deal was 4 for £1, so I took it. Then I wandered to the next stall where they had boxes of doughnut peaches 10 for £1. That’ll teach me for not looking around, let that be a lesson to you dear readers. I had intended to buy more herbs and chillis but I still had some from before, they last amazing well. If I had been buying them from Ocado I would have needed fresh. I also bought a chicken tikka samosa for £1 for my lunch. You didn’t need to know that but I thought you might be interested. I wasn’t as successful on my whole list this time though, here’s what I didn’t get:
- Spinach: I could only find massive leaf, wilty spinach so I decided to see what I could get at Waitrose on the way home instead, I prefer the baby leaf stuff.
- Lemons: at 5 for £2 I didn’t see these as cheap so I thought I’d grab some on the way home (quick check: 6 for £1.75)
- Kale: not in season I wasn’t expecting to see it, Waitrose will have some.
24th July: A top up to replace my Ocado fruit and veg
- 7 avocados
- A red curly lettuce thing
- 2 little gems
- 1 cooked beetroot (yay no pink fingers)
- 125g blueberries
- 125g raspberries
- 5 doughnut peaches
I didn’t see any point in buying it all at once like I do at Ocado and it’s a nice walk from the office on a Thursday afternoon so I split the fruit and veg I would have bought at Ocado into two lists. I also meant to buy 2 courgettes but I tried a new stall and I don’t think he could cope with my ordering style, I think he expected me to pick it all myself – lesson learned. I didn’t realise until I got back to the office that I didn’t have any courgettes!
I’ve only added one packet of fruit to the Sainbury’s order because it works out about the same size weight as the 2 small packs of berries I got. I didn’t really know what to add for the beetroot and I have about half what is in that pack, I’ve reflected it in the price above.
I also saw some white aubergines today, exciting stuff. We’re planning to break free from the meal plan a few times next week and just make something from whatever looks good at the market.
So over those three shops we saved £15.03 not bad!
